Practical Tips
- Getting around: São Paulo is a large and busy city. For convenience, we recommend using Uber Black or arranged transportation, especially in the evening.
- Exploring on foot: Walking is a great way to explore areas such as Paulista Avenue and Ibirapuera Park during the day. At night, prefer taking a car rather than walking longer distances, even when your destination seems nearby.
- Mobile phones: As in any major city, it is best to avoid using your phone while walking on the street. Step inside a café, restaurant, hotel or store if you need to check directions or send a message.
- Personal belongings: Keep phones, wallets and other valuables safely stored, particularly in crowded or busy areas, and avoid leaving belongings unattended.
- Traffic: São Paulo traffic can be unpredictable, particularly during rush hours. Allow some extra time when traveling to the airport, restaurants or scheduled activities.
- Payments: Credit cards and contactless payments are widely accepted, so there is generally no need to carry cash.
- Language: Portuguese is the local language. English is commonly understood in international hotels and many restaurants, but it may be less widely spoken elsewhere. Translation apps can be helpful.
- Weather: São Paulo weather can change throughout the day. A light jacket is always useful to have with you.
- At restaurants: A 10% service charge is commonly included or suggested on restaurant bills. Always check the bill before adding an additional tip.
